We are a typical young family with a mortgage, a cat and a dog. Like everyone, you want comfort and warmth for little money. Therefore, we decided to make repairs on our own. It seemed that it was so easy and simple: "We will just paint everything white and be ready!", "There are video tutorials for all occasions on the Internet." Six months passed and everything that seemed simple was a long and tedious job.
Knowing at least one of these tips before starting repairs, we would save a lot of time and effort. We hope our advice will be useful to you.
Ceiling
If you are not a professional, it is better to abandon the idea to make a plasterboard ceiling yourself. It is difficult even for two of them - sheets of drywall are large and heavy, besides you need to fill the seams between them and, which is the most unpleasant, walk with sandpaper: fine powder flies into your eyes, even if you wear safety glasses. And this is only the beginning, because you need to fix the seams with a grid and re-seal, and this is dust again.
Switches and doors
It seems elementary, but, nevertheless, we made a mistake and installed switches for both the bathroom and the corridor in front of the bathroom. Now our guests constantly play: "How to turn on the light in the bathroom?". We have to do a lot of unnecessary movements.
Laminate and dog
We adore our dog, but after we put a cheap laminate on the floor, our hearts tremble every time the dog decides to stretch, scratching the floor with his nails. In addition, the floor is too slippery for a dog, and her feet are spreading.
Wall color
See that horrible peach color? The store said "beige". We spent a lot of time breeding the mixture, we needed twice as much paint as indicated in the instructions, and when the corners were painted, the paint ended. When kneading a new batch, we didn’t have exactly the same shade, so now we have a colorful corridor.
Light floor
When we had brown linoleum, it was possible to clean the floors once a week and live with a clear conscience for the rest of the time. We thought that the gray floor would solve all our problems with cleaning, but now we have to wash the floor every two days, and it always looks dirty.
Acrylic Bath Blanket
The water in the acrylic bath cools very quickly. Unfortunately, we found it after installation. To achieve better heat saving, it was possible to cover the outer surface of the bath with polyurethane foam.
The experience of joint repair taught us a lot: we united against a common enemy - repair. In addition, we discovered new talents. I had no idea that I could putty, and my husband did not know that he was an expert in installing doors. We learned to negotiate! Now our home is a dream come true created with our own hands.
